NOTICE: School Board Meeting on 1/11/2022

We invite KCS families to attend the upcoming school board meeting.  An agenda item for  a "Potential KCS Student Vaccine Mandate" and a Discussion with Medical Personnel is outlined for the meeting.

Medical Personnel Invited:

• Dr. Bret Smoker, MD, MPH, Clinical Director, IHS Santa Fe Service Unit:  Dr. Smoker is the Clinical Director for the Santa Fe Service Unit, an Indian Health Service organization in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a position he has held since May of 2002.  From 1989 until his arrival in Santa Fe, Dr. Smoker worked at the Northern Navajo  Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico, where he practiced full spectrum family  medicine, served as the Chief of Family Medicine for six years, and served as Chief of  the Medical Staff for three years. Dr. Smoker received his Bachelor of Science in  Biology from the New Mexico State University, received his Doctor of Medicine from  the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, completed a three year residency in  family medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle and received his Master of  Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He served as  the Chair of the Indian Health Service’s National Council of Clinical Directors in 2007, and was the Council’s Co-Chair in 2009 and 2010. From June to November 2009 and  from June 2015 to April 2018, Dr. Smoker served as the Acting Chief Medical Officer  for the Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service. From April 2003 to January 2004,  November 2009 to December 2012, April 2018 to January 2020, and November 2021 to  the present, he was the Acting Chief Executive Officer for the Santa Fe Service Unit.
• Dr. Shaquita Bell, MD, Pediatrician, Interim Medical Director, Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic: Born and raised in Minnesota, Shaquita is Cherokee on her mother’s side and African-American on her father’s. She completed medical school at the University of Minnesota in 2006. Dr. Bell then went on to pediatric residency at the University of Washington, which she completed in 2009. In 2010 she remained at Seattle Childrens completing a chief residency year. Dr. Bell is currently a pediatrician at the community health center Odessa Brown. She is the site coordinator for residents and helps to run the foster care program there. Dr. Bell is faculty at Seattle Childrens and the University of Washington in the division of General Pediatrics. She is a former Chair for the Committee on Native American Child Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics. In her free time she competes in triathlons and is an avid reader.
• Katie Irani is a Vaccine Coordinator on the Tribal Support Section, part of the State, Tribal, Local, & Territorial Task Force of the CDC COVID-19 response. In her position, she works regularly with IHS and tribal nation partners on issues of vaccine distribution, evolving vaccine guidelines and recommendations, and building vaccine confidence among tribal communities through workshops and presentations. When not on the COVID-19 response, she works as a Health Scientist at CDC in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity. She holds a Master of Social Work and Master of Public Health degrees from Washington University in St. Louis.
