KCS Teacher Update8/20/2020 Dear Parents/Guardians,
KCS education during COVID has faced a series of challenges and successes. As KCS staff, we set forth from March 16, 2020 to navigate these challenges with our best committed effort to ensure instruction, food service, and school resources were in place for KCS students. We were successful in implementing a weekly food program that delivered breakfast and lunch to 260 students daily, Monday through Friday. The program was successful because of the level of commitment provided through the shared leadership and teamwork of KCS staff. We have planned, implemented, and assessed each week we have been in COVID response mode for sudden changes and impact that came with this pandemic. We will apply that same commitment to starting the school year for students on August 24, 2020. We feel an incredible responsibility for our students' learning and well-being and decisions we implement are centered in that responsibility. As we move into this year, we are still recruiting for two upper grade level teacher positions, 4th grade and 5th grade. Please know this does not mean our 4th and 5th grade students will be without teachers. Our goal is to ensure that each KCS student has a teacher assigned to teach them across each grade. We are meeting that goal with the commitment of our awesome teachers. The approach we will take for the first quarter as we are in distant learning/virtual mode will have us combining the upper grades under two KCS teachers with an additional support teacher assigned. Our lower grades will each have a single teacher for each grade. The teachers have started contacting student households to inform you that they are your child's teacher and will further explain the scheduling and arrangements for this. Our teachers across the grades as we start the first nine-weeks are:
We will continue recruiting for individual teachers going forward with the best intentions of finding quality committed educators who will implement the school's mission and values. Thank you for your continuing support of KCS staff as we move into fall 2020. We are looking forward to welcoming back students next week! Sincerely, Elizabeth Bahe, Executive Director [email protected] 505-753-4406/505-927-0063

Reopening Letter to Parents/Guardians8/11/2020 Dear KCS Community,
We want to thank you for your patience and support as we worked on creating a school reopening plan to present you with for fall. It has been a journey for us to reach this point, a August 24, 2020 start date for students in distance learning/virtual learning mode. This decision was made with the safety of our entire school community in mind and with input from parents/guardians, board members, and school staff. We have prepared a Return to School Plan Handbook that outlines planning and procedures we will be implementing for fall 2020 as our response to COVID-19. The handbook outlines how we will operate in distance learning, hybrid, and onsite modes for this school year. We have also developed a timeline that we will follow in determining how each quarter of the school year will be implemented. The school website (www.khapoeducation.org) has an area titled "Reopening 2020-2021" that provides a copy of the handbook, highlights on the plan, important dates, and how we will notify parents/guardians of notices and updates. We plan on utilizing the school's website, Facebook page, Bright Arrow text messaging, and parent/guardian email addresses more than we have in previous school years as it allow a quicker notification time and presents less risk for staff and families. Please inform us if you have any changes to your mailing address, phone numbers, and emails so we can update. Our school will have staff and teachers return on August 17, 2020 to provide support and services to KCS students to implement online instruction across the grades. Teachers will provide the class schedule for your student beginning August 18, 2020. Chromebooks and student supplies distribution is scheduled for parents/guardians (who live in the Pueblo) on August 20th and August 21st, between the times of 12-4 pm. The student drop off area in the school parking lot will be set up for a safe pick up of items. We have school supplies for students arranged and welcome back to school gifts for them as well. Please wear masks and stay socially distanced while picking up items. For students who live outside the Pueblo, we will arrange an offsite area in Espanola for pick up and will notify you of location and time through a phone call by school staff. As we return for another school year, please read the Return to School Plan Handbook and "Reopening 2020-2021" website as it provides expanded information on how we are reopening. Teamwork and safety at KCS is what we have been focused on and we will continue with that as we reopen the school. It is an unprecedented time and we have accomplished much through our team focus as a school. We know that it will take all of us to ensure a supportive return for students. I can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 505-357-1045/505-927-0063 for any questions. Our main school number 505-753-4406 will also direct you to our front desk for school questions and to other staff for questions you have. Sincerely, Elizabeth Bahe, M.Ed Executive Director Archives
